A second session will also be offered on Saturday, April 11, 9 am-1 pm (see separate posting)
The area that is often referred to as 'South Canyon' is along the Deschutes River upstream (south) of the Bill Healy Bridge and Farewell Bend Park. This trip will focus on the east side of the river on a property that is currently owned by the Central Oregon Irrigation District (COID) but is in the process of being sold for development. The course of the Deschutes River in this area has been repeatedly altered by volcanism sourced in the Cascades and Newberry areas. On this trip we will examine outcrops that tell this story.
Total mileage will be about 3 miles with about 200 feet of elevation loss/gain. We will be walking on a combination of gravel roads, maintained and user trails with some minor off trail travel. Please contact Derek Loeb at DerekLoeb@gmail.com with any questions.
