Please join Al Albin, retired geologist who previously worked for United States Bureau of Reclamation, on a geo-exploration of the Hollywood Road Trail in Crooked River Ranch. The Hollywood Road is an old ranch road that was paved in the mid 1960's in conjunction with the filming of the 1967 film 'The Way West'.

The road is long abandoned and has deteriorated so now it is used as a trail. While undoubtedly a great backdrop for a Hollywood western, our main interest is in the geology that is exposed along the road and easily visible across the canyon of the Crooked River. We will walk a short distance along the canyon rim which is formed by an intra-canyon basalt. The initial descent will provide a good, close up view of the internal structure of the intra-canyon basalt which we can compare to the same unit visible across the canyon. As we descend to the Crooked River we will see good exposures of the Deschutes Formation.
The initial meetup point will be the scenic overlook located on the bend in SW Chinook Drive. From here we drive down partway into the canyon past the RV park to the trailhead. The descent into the inner canyon is about 1 mile one way and has a moderate grade.
Trip is limited to 18 participants who must be a COGS member or a guest of member. Please contact Derek Loeb, DerekLoeb@gmail.com with any questions. There will be a ride share meetup option for Bend area participants and possibly one from Redmond.
