Eruptive styles and products in the Cascades range widely. This talk summarizes typical processes and hazards related to explosive volcanism, their impacts on society, and how the USGS Cascades Volcano Observatory works to mitigate and minimize impacts and loss of life to communities at risk.
Mount St. Helens: Empowering a Revolution in Volcano Risk Reduction
Carolyn Driedger
Responses to eruptions of Mount St. Helens between 1980 and 1986, and 2004 and 2008 required the attention of authorities in professions ranging from policymakers and emergency managers to specialized information disseminators. Over 44 years their collective actions have become the nucleus of an informal ‘volcanic risk management system’ that addresses society’s need for risk-reduction measures and meets individual organizations’ missions. This presentation will focus on some creative endeavors and synergistic programs developed to reduce volcanic risk.
