Please join Carrie Gordon, retired Ochoco National Forest geologist, as we walk the Barnes Butte park trails. Trip starts at the Barnes Butte Trailhead in Prineville, just north of Barnes Butte Elementary School. After a short organizational discussion and introductory geologic framework, participants will walk the park trails, roughly 2 ½ miles round trip with only minor elevation changes (we will not be climbing to the summit which is a goat scramble). Our view will be looking across the Crooked River Caldera to the high Cascades with a short side-trip to look at the gated adits of the Barnes Butte mercury mine. Along the way, we will explore outcrops of Rhyolite and deposits of Mazama Ash and other geologic curiosities.
A location to meet for ride sharing or caravaning from Bend will be arranged. Please contact Derek Loeb at DerekLoeb@gmail.com with questions?
Please note that this event is limited to 15 participants and registration must be done via the registration button on the trip listing on the COGS website. Successful registration will be confirmed on the webpage by a light green box indicating registration was successful and by a confirmation email. If you don't get this email you should try the registration process again.
