John Day Fossil Beds National Monument

Led by Dr. Nick Famoso and Jennifer Cavin

Friday, September 30

10 AM-3:30 PM

 



In the morning, you will have the opportunity to see behind-the-scenes of the museum collections and the fossil preparation lab. Groups of no more than 10 will go through both areas and will be led by Dr. Nick Famoso, Head Paleontologist and Museum Curator, and Jennifer Cavin, Head Fossil Preparator. In the afternoon, you will head out to the field and volunteer for the park's paleontology program assisting in the collection of fossils. All collected fossils will be added to the museum collections at John Day Fossil Beds National Monument.

This field trip will begin at the Thomas Condon Paleontology Center at 10 AM and finish up about 3:30 PM.

A meet up location for ride sharing will be offered for Bend and Prineville.  Per COGS policy, ride sharing is strictly voluntary.  Please bring a face mask and respect the drivers wishes concerning mask wearing.  Face mask usage is optional while indoors at the Thomas Condon Paleontology Center but this may change based on the Covid risk level. Participants may elect to travel independently and spend more time in the monument or the general area.

Registration opens September 10 . This trip is limited to 20 participants.  All participants must be a COGS member or a guest of one and agree to the COGS liability waiver which requires all participants to self certify that they are fully vaccinated and boosted.  Please leave your pets at home as they are not allowed on COGS field activities.  Please contact Derek Loeb ( DerekLoeb@gmail.com ) with any questions.
