Monthly Tours of the OSU-Cascades Pumice Mine
Tours SUSPENDED due to coronovirus
Join OSU-Cascades for tours of the former pumice mine:
OSU-Cascades is organizing monthly tours of the construction site for the next phase of campus expansion, and COGS is invited!
This location was an active pumice mine, and is the future site of the OSU-Cascades campus expansion. The pit features spectacular exposures of the ~400 ka Bend Pumice and Tumalo Tuff, and the ~600 ka Desert Springs Tuff. But these exposures will not be visible for long! As part of the campus expansion project the pit will be filled in and terraced. Monthly tours during the construction phases of the project offer a great opportunity to see these volcanic exposures before the pit is permanently filled in.
This field trip is appropriate for all levels of geologic background, and all physical abilities. We will meet at the OSU-Cascades Welcome Center for an overview of the geology, then take OSU-Cascades vans into the pit. No need to leave the van, and no protective gear needed – just enjoy the ride!
