Extension and stretching of the North American plate created the Basin and Range physiographic province in western North America. The northwestern part of this province in northern California and Oregon lies in the backarc of the Cascadia subduction zone, a region characterized by rotational deformation. This presentation will examine the opening and expansion of the Oregon Basin and Range province and the resulting tectonic forces that have shaped central Oregon and the Cascades.
